Gay Men and Bodybuilders Started This. Straight Guys Are Catching Up
Gay men and competitive bodybuilders are widely credited as the earliest adopters of male body hair removal in the modern era — both scenes were shaving and grooming for smoothness and muscle definition decades before "manscaping" became a word straight men would say out loud. The taboo you might still feel about grooming down there isn't ancient history. It's a fairly recent, and frankly overdue, straight-guy catch-up.
Where it actually started: stages and gyms, not bathrooms
Competitive bodybuilding has required shaving and oiling for stage lighting since long before it was cool anywhere else — under bright lights, body hair flattens muscle definition, so smooth skin became part of the job for anyone stepping on stage. That culture grew up around gyms like the famous Gold's Gym era in 1970s Venice Beach, the same physique scene that made bodybuilding mainstream, and shaving down was simply part of contest prep.
Around the same decades, grooming and body presentation became a much bigger part of gay male culture and community than it was in mainstream straight culture — smoothness, definition and taking care of your body weren't seen as anything to be embarrassed about. While straight culture was still treating any male grooming beyond a haircut as suspicious, these were the circles where it was simply normal.
Why it took straight guys so long
For a long stretch, "manscaping" was mostly a punchline in straight culture — something for a comedy sketch, not a Tuesday-night routine. A lot of that came down to old, tired ideas about what grooming "means" about a man, ideas that were never really true and are finally dying out. Meanwhile gay men and bodybuilders had already been doing it for years without any of that baggage.
The taboo is basically dead now
These days, plenty of straight men groom intimately and just don't talk about it much — which is a very different thing from it being unusual. We wrote a full answer to whether this is normal in is it normal for men to groom their intimate areas? — short version: yes, it's just quiet, not rare.
